What is the Denver Pops Orchestra?

If you’re looking for a delightful night out filled with incredible live music right here in the Denver area, let us introduce you to the absolute gem that is the Denver Pops Orchestra! This amazing group has been bringing joy to our community since 1979 with performances that are nothing short of magical.

This group holds an extra special place in our hearts, as one of our very own clients, Dennis DeBay, is a talented musician in the orchestra! It’s so inspiring to see how he balances his passion for music with his amazing work as an educator. We are more than thrilled to support him and this group.

The Denver Pops Orchestra is a community-based nonprofit organization made up of over 65 talented volunteer musicians. Yep, you read that right — volunteers! These musicians come from all walks of life, all ages, and professions, but they come together with one shared passion: creating beautiful music for all of us to enjoy.

What type of music does the Denver Pops Orchestra play?

Under the fantastic direction of Music Director Ron Argotsinger, the Denver Pops Orchestra delivers an incredible variety of music. We’re talking everything from light classical pieces and Broadway favorites to movie soundtracks that will give you all the goosebumps.

And guess what? They don’t just stick to the big orchestra performances! They also have smaller ensembles like a jazz band, German polka band, woodwind quintet, and string quartet. Oh, and their Grant Ave. Players (a 10-piece chamber music group) performs at schools and senior centers, spreading joy wherever they go.

We interviewed one of the musicians!

We are so lucky to have one of the Denver Pops Orchestra’s musicians as a client. We decided to take advantage and reach out to busy professor and musician, Dennis DeBay, to learn more about this awesome group. Read here what he has to say!

What is your involvement in the Denver Pops Orchestra?

I am one of the percussionists for the Denver Pops, which means I get to add all the booms, crashes, and dramatic flourishes that keep things exciting! From timpani to snare to cymbal smashes that make you jump a little—I’m all about the rhythm and impact.

How did you get involved with this group?

It started with me just showing up to listen to a rehearsal as I toyed with the idea of returning to music after a 20-year hiatus. They were short on percussionists that night and asked me to hop in. One thing led to another, and before I knew it—boom!—I was part of the group. I guess you could say I drummed my way in!

How do you find the time to rehearse while balancing your career as a professor?

Balance is key—literally and figuratively. Teaching keeps my brain busy, but playing music keeps my soul happy. Rehearsals have become my creative escape, a chance to hit things (musically, of course) and de-stress. Plus, let’s be honest, every professor needs a good hobby that doesn’t involve grading papers!

What is your favorite part about being involved in this group?

Hands down, the people. The musicians in Denver Pops are incredible—both in talent and in spirit. It’s been amazing to be welcomed into this community and to be part of something bigger than myself. Also, playing some of my favorite pieces with a full orchestra? Goosebumps every time!

Why should people attend your upcoming concerts?

Do you think classical music is all lullabies and background study tunes? Think again! This concert is packed with EPIC, adrenaline-pumping music that will leave you on the edge of your seat. From the thrilling ride of In the Hall of the Mountain King to the cosmic drama of Saturn and the soaring grandeur of Pines of Rome—this is a soundtrack-worthy experience you don’t want to miss. Grab your tickets and prepare to be blown away!

A huge ‘thank you’ to Dennis for taking the time to answer our questions, we really appreciate it!

I’m interested! Now what?

Supporting the Denver Pops Orchestra is as easy as snagging tickets to their performances or even hiring their smaller ensembles for special events. They play at formal dances, benefits, and other community events, making everything feel just a little more magical.

Plus, your support helps keep this fabulous music scene alive and well, thanks to audience donations, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), and revenue from special events.
