Blog > Artist Spotlight: Susan Helbig, Victoria Kwasinski and Beverly Thomas

We love shining a spotlight on local artists and creatives! This month we hear from 3 artists in their own words.
SUSAN HELBIG

“My work is based on my love
of combining media and is best
expressed using a variety of
approaches and materials. Typically,
I begin a work by choosing a word or
phrase (for example, “map-making”)
that intrigues me. This generates
ideas for a combination of interesting
images and approaches. After making
order of rather incomplete, chaotic
images, I feel the final product
will indicate a visual language of
suggestion that is shared with
the viewer.”

VICTORIA KWASINSKI

Find and follow her online here.
“My work is composed of multiple
layers of oil and cold wax applied and
subtracted with palette knives,
brayers, squeegees, scrapers and
carving tools. Layers are carved
through to previous ones, then
additional paint added. I often
include textural aspects by adding
marble powder, sand, ash, granite
crystals, etc.
The process takes me on a
journey of sometimes challenging
moments and often surprising
and wonderful discoveries. I work
intuitively and let the painting tell me
when it is finished.”

“All my life I have been an escapist,
wandering and exploring Woodlands,
Waterways and Mountains. Words do
not suffice when surrounded by the
power of such beauty. In my paintings
it is the color filled spaces that flow,
merge and tell a story. These places
have special meaning. No matter how
often I visit, I always find something
new and unique. I paint these areas
to encourage people to experience
the colors, changing forms and the
simplicity of it all.”
