We had the pleasure of interviewing Denver abstract artist, Leslie Anne Powers, before her upcoming show at Denver Arts Festival this weekend. Working with ink, metallic foils, glitter, and resin, Leslie has formed a process of creating that is all her own. Founder of LA Art Co, Leslie creates works that are high energy, vibrant, and can transform any room. Check out our interview with her, below!

Art of Home Team: Leslie, we absolutely love your art. Can you tell us a bit about the media you work with?

LA Art Co: I am a mixed media abstract artist. I love to work with inks (acrylic ink, India ink, alcohol ink), metallic foils, glitter and resin. I also do some textured abstract works with modeling paste, pearl pigments and a palette knife. I have created a unique process where I move the inks over metallic foil with a spray bottle and a pallet knife to create organic shapes. I then layer multiple times and add touches of glitter and iridescent paint that shine in different lighting. The last step is a glossy coat of resin to give the piece a glass like finish and depth.

AOHT: So, not only do you create artworks, but an entirely unique process of making art along the way. How do you describe your art?

LA: I would describe my latest collection of art “brilliant inks” as high energy, vibrant statement pieces. The kind of art that can transform a room and your mood. I believe color has the ability to bring out not only emotion in us but a vibration that can heal, energize and change our world, one room at a time. ; )

AOHT: That is a beautiful statement to live by. What inspires you to create?

LA: I love design and high fashion homes. It thrills me to create art for beautiful spaces and inspire home owners. I am constantly looking for new ways to share my love for design with my art. I have an affinity for refinishing furniture, countertops and even a pocket door with an artistic resin touch. I am currently working on a new line of wall art treatments coming out next year. From wall paper of my art prints with hand painted foil detail to removable art murals, to create the perfect accent walls. Check out my website for fun accessories, like makeup bags, t-shirts and soon to come pillows/ wall art!

AOHT: And we’ve gotten to see, first hand, some of your in-home designs. You truly have an eye for transformation. What are some of your favorite pieces that you’ve created?

LA: I have a special connection with all my pieces. I pour my heart and soul into everything and even write intentions into my work under the paint. I also place crystals on the canvas to help raise the vibration of the art as I create. I often find my self with a piece that is finished and say “I’m never selling this one” and then I know it’s good (and usually end up selling it). But if I had to choose, I would say I have two faves currently, “gypsy”- an acrylic ink diptych, with brilliant colors layered over metallic gold foil and hints of iridescent glitter, covered in resin. This piece has a free soul feeling and sparkles in different lights. The other, “amour propre” which means self love. I spent many months working through this one both internally and on the canvas. It truly became an expression of “self love” that many of us could use some more of. It was created with acrylic paint, gouache and many layers of inks.

AOHT: We can see why it may be difficult letting go of any of these pieces, they’re truly incredible. Your process of creating from the heart sounds unique and intimate. Any fun or interesting stories about a piece that you’ve done?

LA: I once created a piece for a client friend and kept having these heart shapes coming through as I was painting. When you work with inks they tend to do what they want and I constantly have to keep manipulating them with a pallet knife and a spray bottle to get it right. At the time I didn’t really want the heart shapes and kept thinking “no I don’t think this is what my client wants”.  As the painting progressed it all just magically came together, with the hearts still there.. I then learned that my client’s mother was an artist and she had passed away a few years before. The piece was titled “bleeding heart” and had so much meaning to her and the loss of her mother, with a large heart over a small heart, always connected together.

AOHT: What are you currently working on?

LA: I am currently working on finishing a series of zodiac paintings that are textured with metallics and glitter. Mine is the Libra.
