Blog > Denver's Sunnyside Neighborhood: Former Celery Farm and Mayor Speer
Eight years ago, we helped our very creative, city-loving clients buy one of the coolest homes in Denver’s Sunnyside neighborhood, down the street from Chaffee Park (home of the Sunnyside Music Festival), and next to the new Globeville World Trade Center (opens in 2022) and G-Line rail. The home’s former owner, J. Guy Smith, was a celery farmer who ran against Robert Walter Speer in the mayoral race.

Rumor was that Speer stole the election. “It was soon revealed that his campaign used fake votes to help him get elected.” Speer was known for all kinds of political tricks.
In any case, Speer was mayor from 1904-1912, and again from 1916-1918, before he died of The Spanish Flu. He was known as the “City Beautiful” Mayor, and he put Denver on the map for city attractions in many ways… Learn more about former Denver Mayor Speer from Rocky Mountain PBS.

Back to Sunnyside: The old detached brick structure on this property was used to hang celery, and our clients were able to convert it to an income generating ADU in a pretty long process with the city. It was worth the wait! Here’s to understanding Denver’s past, so we can celebrate its bright future!

The home has appreciated very well, even though it seemed like a high price & big risk in 2013. Our market is still going up. Don’t miss out on your meant-to-be gem today! It could very well be your most important nest egg. The market here is going to be going up up up for awhile. Low inventory, low rates, huge demand. Our team would love to help you find your next nest. Or help you sell your current one, so you can get into your dream home.
