Blog > Local Denver and Boulder Theaters Re-Opening with Social Distancing
Looks like local movie theaters are back! As the world cautiously takes steps toward “normalcy”, we are finding more ways to support local businesses. Local theaters like the Mayan Theater, the Boulder Theater, and Alamo Drafthouse are open with distanced seating.

The Mayan, located on S Broadway between 1st and 2nd Ave in Denver, is offering both public and private showings of new films. Opened in 1930, the Mayan Theatre is one of three theaters in the U.S. designed in the Art Deco Mayan Revival style and has been declared a historic landmark by the city of Denver. It’s seen many eras; during the Great Depression, the Mayan even held “Grocery Nights”, where customers could come and win groceries. Now showing Blithe Spirit, Nomadland, and award-winning Sundance film, Minari.
The Boulder Theater will reopen this Friday, February 26th, complying with strict local, state, and national health guidelines. On the calendar in the coming weeks are Bowregard, the Boulder Symphony, and Policulture.
The Alamo Drafthouse in Sloan’s Lake is also open for business, showing Do The Right Thing, E.T., and Fargo this week. Check out new releases Nomadland, Tom & Jerry (2021), and Judas and the Black Messiah. Private auditorium rentals are available starting at $150. You choose the movie, food, and guest list.
The Sie Film Center (home to nonprofit Denver Film) at Colfax and Columbine by the Tattered Cover Book Store is also open. They’re currently offering private auditorium rentals, virtual showings, and film festival passes to upcoming virtual festivals like the Colorado Dragon Boat Film Festival (March 4-7) and the Women + Film Festival (April 13-18). These festivals will be hosted online by Denver Film.
When we can’t yet travel, at least the theatre can still transport us. Stay well!
